What led Jerome to become an Electrician?
“When I was 25 my best friend told me I should come to work with him at Titan Motor Homes since they needed an electrician. I didn’t know anything about electrical, but they said not to worry, they would train me. I grew to love electrcial, and still do. Figuring out why things don’t work and then being capable of fixing it was exciting to me. To this day they were the best employer I’ve ever had. I still remember the days when gas prices shot from $.39 a gallon to $.79 a gallon and the first thing to stop moving were motor homes. When they had me sweeping the parking lot more than installing, I knew it was time for me to look for other work. That’s when I became an Electrical Apprentice. As a learner I had some excellent excellent teachers in the Apprenticship Program and in college.”
What motivated him to start J. Williams Services, Inc.?
“As a learner, my goal was to work on projects in the commercial field, and finally I went to work for a contractor who did the jobs I wanted most: large commercial and military projects. Eventually I started running jobs for the company as a superintendent. I loved the boss, he had good electricians working for him, and we had lots of work, but… he was a mess. Paychecks would bounce, you wouldn’t have the parts and tools you needed, more often than not we lacked proper direction… and I sat down one day and thought, ‘I could do it better than this.’

That’s when I started out on the road of self-employment and in 1989 I started what is now J. Williams Services, Inc. I’ve always made sure my employees have the right tools. I have good guys, so if they said they needed something, I got it. Simple as that. Business for me has always been about giving the customer what they want, when they want it. You can’t do that if you don’t have what you need. When I did electrical work I wanted to make the customer happy, and the best way for me to do that was to go out on my own.”

What type of projects has Jerome's company completed over the years?
“My first two projects after I started on my own was a Police Station and a Library. Over the last 26 years we have performed work on public schools, high security prisons, a U.S. Government Air Force Base, sewage and water treatment plants, large-scale manufacturing plants and a long string of grocery stores and other retail.

Recently we were involved with the construction of the University of Florida’s Research and Academic Center on Lake Nona Rd, the renovation of historic Amtrak Orlando Station, DeLand’s new bus station and some other exciting projects. It makes me happy to know we have successfully completed every job we have ever started.”
